Land Rover Defender: Rear Shock Absorber

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

GENERAL EQUIPMENT

REMOVAL

NOTES:

• This procedure contains illustrations for left side components, right side components are similar.
• This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.
• This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.

The following step(s) applies to: Vehicles with third row seats

1. Remove the left loadspace trim panel.

The following step(s) applies to: Vehicles without third row seats

2. Remove the left loadspace trim panel.

The following step(s) applies to: All vehicles

3. Depressurise the suspension system.

4. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2-post lift.

5. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

NOTE: If equipped.

Disconnect the electrical connector.

• Use a suitable stand to support the lower control arm.

  General Equipment: Transmission jack

• Remove and discard the 3 nuts.
• Remove and discard the nut and bolt.
• Lower the transmission jack.
• Remove the rear shock absorber assembly.

NOTE: Only do the following step(s) if a new component is to be installed.

• Remove the gasket from the rear shock absorber.
• Remove and discard the nut.
• Remove the rear shock absorber upper bracket.

9.

• Remove the rear shock absorber bumper.
• Remove and discard the clip.
• Remove the rear shock absorber boot.

INSTALLATION

The following step(s) applies to: All vehicles

1.

NOTE: Only do the following step(s) if a new component is to be installed.

• Install the rear shock absorber boot to the rear shock absorber.

  Renew Part: Shock absorber boot kit Quantity: 1.

• Install the rear shock absorber bumper to the rear shock absorber.

• Install the rear shock absorber upper bracket to the rear shock absorber.
• Install and tighten the nut.

  Renew Part: Shock absorber nut Quantity: 1.

  Torque: 27Nm

• Secure the rear shock absorber boot to the rear shock absorber upper bracket.
• Install the clamp to secure the rear shock absorber boot.
• Install the gasket to the rear shock absorber.

  Renew Part: Shock absorber gasket Quantity: 1.

• Install the rear shock absorber assembly.
• Install and tighten the 3 nuts.

  Renew Part: Shock absorber upper mounting nut Quantity: 3.

  Torque: 48Nm

• Use the stand to raise the suspension to normal ride height.
• Install and tighten the rear shock absorber to wheel knuckle bolt and nut.

  Renew Part: Shock absorber to wheel knuckle mounting nut and bolt Quantity: 1.

Torque

• Stage1: 100Nm
• Stage2: 240º

• Remove the transmission jack.

  General Equipment: Transmission jack

4.

NOTE: If eguipped.

Connect the electrical connector to the rear shock absorber.

5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.

6. Install the left loadspace trim panel.

The following step(s) applies to: Vehicles without third row seats

7. Install the left loadspace trim panel.

The following step(s) applies to: All vehicles

8. Pressurise the suspension system.
