Land Rover Defender: Front Silencer

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

REMOVAL

WARNING: Observe due care when working near a hot exhaust system.

CAUTION: Make sure the exhaust system is supported at all times.

NOTE:

• This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
• This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.

1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

WARNING: This step requires the aid of another technician.

• Remove and discard the exhaust clamp.
• Remove the 4 exhaust hanger mounting bracket bolts.
• Release the rear silencer from the 2 exhaust hanger bracket mounting rubbers.
• Remove the rear exhaust section.

NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Remove the 2 exhaust hanger mounting brackets.

4.

• Use a suitable tool to cut and remove the front silencer in the marked position as illustrated.

INSTALLATION

1. Install the 2 exhaust hanger mounting brackets.

• Install but do not fully tighten the new front exhaust clamp.

  Renew Part: Front exhaust clamp Quantity: 1.

WARNING: This step requires the aid of another technician.

NOTE: Steps 3-4 are only required if previously removed.

• Install the front silencer.
• Install and tighten the 4 exhaust hanger mounting bracket bolts.

  Torque: 27.5Nm

• Fully tighten the front exhaust clamp.

  Torque: 55Nm

4.

WARNING: This step requires the aid of another technician.

• Install but do not fully tighten the new rear silencer clamp.

  Renew Part: Rear exhaust silencer clamp Quantity: 1.

• Install the rear silencer.
• Install the rear silencer into the 2 exhaust hanger bracket mounting rubbers.
• Align the rear silencer into the correct location.
• Fully tighten the rear silencer clamp.

  Torque: 48Nm

5.

WARNING: This step requires the aid of another technician.

NOTE: This step is only required if the component was removed for access.

• Install the rear exhaust section.
• Install and tighten the 4 exhaust hanger mounting bracket bolts.

  Torque: 27.5Nm

• Align the rear exhaust section into the correct location.
• Fully tighten the front exhaust clamp.
