Land Rover Defender: Rear View Mirrors - Operation

DOOR MIRROR ADJUSTMENT

Door mirror adjustment is enabled:

When the driver door or passenger door mirror switch is pressed, the LED in the switch illuminates. The door mirror adjustment switch can be used to move the door mirror glass of the related door mirror. The driver door switchpack interprets the door mirror adjustment switch movement and transmits it to the DDM on the LIN. The DDM transmits the signals for the passenger door mirror to the PDM. The DDM communicates with the PDM on the HS CAN body systems bus.

On receipt of an adjustment signal, the door module connects a power supply and ground to the relevant adjustment motor to move the door mirror glass. When the door mirror adjustment switch is tilted in the opposite direction, the door module reverses the polarity of the adjustment motor. The mirror glass moves in the opposite direction.

REVERSE DIPPING (IF EQUIPPED)

Reverse dipping is only available on vehicles with seat memory switchpack. Reverse dipping can be enabled and disabled in the vehicle set-up section of the vehicle information and settings menu. When in Power Mode 6 (ignition ON) and REVERSE is selected, reverse dipping is enabled. The door mirrors automatically dip to provide a better view of the curbside.

The door mirrors return to its original position immediately when:

The dipped position of the door mirrors is stored in the BCM/ GWM. The BCM/ GWM signals the door modules on the HS CAN body systems bus. The signals move the door mirror glass into and out of the dipped position.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) transmits the REVERSE signal to the BCM/ GWM through the FlexRay.

The dipped door mirror position can be adjusted using the mirror switches when in Power Mode 6 (ignition ON) and REVERSE is selected. The last adjusted position is stored automatically when REVERSE is disengaged.

The REVERSE must be selected for approximately 0.5 second before the door mirrors move to the dipped position.

The time delay prevents nuisance movement of the door mirror when the transmission selection moves between PARK and DRIVE.

DOOR MIRROR HEATING

There are 2 modes of heated door mirror operation, manual and automatic.

Manual operation

To activate the door mirror heating manually, operate the heated rear window switch. When the switch is pressed, the LED in the switch illuminates and the door mirror heater element is energized.

Manual operation is discontinued, for example:

Automatic operation

Automatic operation is initiated when low AATs are experienced. The BCM/ GWM receives the AAT value from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) on the FlexRay. The BCM/ GWM converts the AAT value to an ON time percentage. The BCM/ GWM transmits it to the door modules on the HS CAN body systems bus. The door modules then energize the door mirror heating elements. The ON time percentage is increased while the windshield wipers are switched ON.

Automatic operation can be enabled and disabled using the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment.

DOOR MIRROR POWER FOLD (IF EQUIPPED)

To activate the door mirror power fold function, press the left and right mirror switches at the same time to fold the door mirrors. Pressing both of the switches again unfolds the door mirrors. Operation of door mirror foldback is inhibited at speeds of more than 112 km/h (70 mph). When the door mirrors are accidentally knocked out of synchronization, press both of the switches again to re-synchronize them.

Automatic operation can be enabled and disabled using the JLR approved diagnostic equipment. When automatic operation is enabled, the door mirrors automatically fold and unfold when the vehicle is locked and unlocked using the smart key. However, when the door mirrors are folded using the door mirror switches, they do not automatically unfold when the vehicle is unlocked.

In garage mode, the mirrors also do not automatically unfold when the vehicle is unlocked. The purpose is to prevent the mirrors being damaged when unfolding in a tight garage spot. The mirrors automatically unfold unless the vehicle speed is more than 40 km/h (25 mph).

MEMORY RECALL (IF EQUIPPED)

On the driver side, the DSM can memorize up to 3 different positions for the driver seat and the door mirrors. The purpose is to enable 3 different drivers to achieve their optimum driving position.

When a position is stored or recalled for channels 1 to 3:

  1. The DDM transmits the information to the BCM/ GWM. The DDM communicates with the BCM/ GWM through the HS CAN body systems bus.
  2. The signal is relayed to the DSM.

Each door module evaluates the recall or storage command and does the necessary adjustments to the door mirrors.

When a manual door mirror adjustment is selected while a memory recall is operating, it overrides the memory recall movement.

For memory recall operation, the door mirror adjustment potentiometers must deliver a voltage value in the range of 80mV - 4.8V. When the voltage is outside of this range the door mirrors do not operate when memory is selected.

AUTOMATIC DIMMING RVM (IF EQUIPPED)

Power for the feature(s) in the RVM is provided by an ignition feed from the PJB. The light sensor in the front of the RVM monitors ambient light at the front of the vehicle. The light sensor in the rear of the RVM monitors the light coming from behind the vehicle. When the light from behind the vehicle is more than the ambient light level, the automatic dimming circuits darken the RVM glass.

Automatic dimming is inhibited when REVERSE is selected, to provide the driver with maximum vision.

The REVERSE signal for the BCM/ GWM is provided by the TCM through the FlexRay.

The BCM/ GWM then provides a hardwired signal to the RVM.

CLEAR SIGHT RVM (IF EQUIPPED)

The clear sight RVM provides the driver with a clear rear view from a camera located in the roof pod. Power for the feature(s) in the clear sight RVM is provided by an ignition feed from the PJB.

How to select the mode of the clear sight RVM

With Power Mode 6 (ignition ON), pull the clear sight RVM mode switch backward to select the clear sight RVM camera mode. Push the clear sight RVM mode switch forward to select conventional RVM mode.

Each time the clear sight RVM setting switch is pressed in the clear sight RVM camera mode, you can adjust the settings:

Adjustment in the LCD:

Automatic dimming

In either of the modes, the clear sight RVM has an automatic dimming function.

The light sensor in the front of the clear sight RVM monitors the ambient light at the front of the vehicle. The light sensor in the rear of the clear sight RVM monitors the light coming from behind the vehicle. When the light from behind the vehicle exceeds the ambient light level, the automatic dimming circuits darken the LCD.

Automatic dimming is inhibited when REVERSE is selected, to provide the driver with maximum vision.

The REVERSE signal for the BCM/ GWM is provided by the TCM through the FlexRay.

The BCM/ GWM then provides a hardwired signal to the clear sight RVM.

AUTOMATIC DIMMING DOOR MIRROR (IF EQUIPPED)

NOTE: The electrochromic elements in the door mirror work on 1.5V. The electrochromic glass cell fails when the voltage is more than 1.5V.

The door mirrors with automatic dimming are slaved to the RVM or the clear sight RVM. The RVM or the clear sight RVM determines the amount of dimming required and energizes the electrochromic elements in the door mirrors accordingly. Power supply and ground connections for the electrochromic elements are provided by the RVM or the clear sight RVM directly through hardwired connection.

HOMELINK (IF EQUIPPED)

The HomeLink wireless control system provides a convenient way to replace up to 3 handheld Radio Frequency (RF) transmitters used to activate devices, for example:

WARNINGS:

NOTE: Please note that the instructions below apply to the majority of HomeLink use cases. However, there are some HomeLink applications or HomeLink compatible systems that require slightly different instructions.

NOTES:

  1. With Power Mode 6 (ignition ON), press the HomeLink switch that you want to program. The HomeLink status indicator flashes orange slowly (do not continue to press the HomeLink switch).
  2. Position the end of your handheld transmitter 2 - 8 cm (1 - 3 inches) away from the HomeLink switch. Keep the HomeLink status indicator in view.
  3. NOTE: Some devices may require you to replace this programing Step 3 with procedures noted in the 'Gate Operator/Canadian Programing' section. When the HomeLink status indicator does not change to rapidly flashing green or continuously lit green after executing these steps, contact HomeLink at www.homelink.com.

Press and hold the handheld transmitter switch. The HomeLink status indicator changes to either rapidly flashing green (rolling code) or continuously lit green (fixed code). Now release the handheld transmitter switch.

NOTE: The garage door opener receiver (motor-head unit) may vary by manufacturer. The 'Learn' or 'Smart' switch can usually be found directly on the motor-head unit (see the 'Garage Door Opener' manual to identify the 'Learn switch').

Gate operator/Canadian programing (Canadian market only)

Canadian RF laws require transmitter signals to time out (or quit) after several seconds of transmission. The time may not be long enough for HomeLink to pick up the signal during programing. Similar to this Canadian law, some U.S.

gate operators are also designed to time out.

When you live in Canada or you have difficulties programing a gate operator or garage door opener, replace 'Programing HomeLink' Step 3 with the following:

NOTE: Do not plug the garage door opener receiver during the 'cycling' process to prevent possible overheating when programing a garage door opener or gate operator.

Erasing HomeLink switches

To erase programing from all the 3 switches (individual switches cannot be erased but can be 'reprogramed' as outlined below), follow these steps:

  1. Switch the vehicle in Power Mode 6 (ignition ON).
  2. NOTE: Do not hold the HomeLink switches for longer than 20 seconds.

Press and hold the 2 outer HomeLink switches until the HomeLink status indicator changes from continuous orange to rapidly flashing green.

  1. Release both switches. HomeLink is now in the train (or learning) mode and can be programed at any time beginning with 'Programing' - Step 1.

Reprograming a single HomeLink switch

To program a device to HomeLink using a HomeLink switch previously trained (shown by a green HomeLink status indicator) follow these steps:

  1. Switch the vehicle in Power Mode 6 (ignition ON).
  2. Press and hold the desired HomeLink switch. The HomeLink status indicator begins to slowly flash orange after 20 seconds.
  3. Release the HomeLink switch. Proceed with 'Programing HomeLink' - Step 3.

NOTE: When additional programing support is needed, please call the toll-free HomeLink Hotline at 1-800-355-3515.

2-way communication HomeLink (if equipped)

When vehicles and garage door openers are capable of 2-way communication HomeLink, the HomeLink can receive and display 'closing'/'opening' status from your garage door opener.

When 2-way communication programing is successful, the HomeLink status indicator displays the status of your garage door opener.

The garage door opener status indicator shows the garage door opener status as follows:

Programing 2-way communication HomeLink (if equipped)

After programing a new HomeLink switch, proceed with 'Programing HomeLink' Step 6 to enable 2-way communication. When the garage door opener status indicator appears on the clear sight RVM when pressing the HomeLink switch, the programing is complete.

DIAGNOSTICS

The BCM/ GWM records any Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) (DTC)s and related data. Read the DTCs and related data with the JLR approved diagnostic equipment.

The JLR approved diagnostic equipment can read live data and activate certain components.
