Land Rover Defender: Front Door Latch

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

REMOVAL

CAUTION: Protect the surrounding paintwork to avoid damage.

NOTES:

• This procedure contains illustrations for left hand drive vehicles, right hand drive vehicles are similar.
• This procedure contains illustrations showing certain components removed to provide extra clarity.
• This procedure contains some variation in the illustrations depending on the vehicle specification, but the essential information is always correct.

1. Disconnect the startup battery ground cable.

2. Remove the front door window regulator.

3.

Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the exterior door handle assembly.

4.

• Disconnect the 2 electrical connectors from the front door latch.
• Release the 2 wiring harness clips.

5.

• Remove the access plug.
• Loosen the screw, but do not fully remove.

6.

• Pull the front door exterior handle.
• Remove the front door lock access cover.

7.

Remove the front door exterior handle as illustrated.

8.

• Remove the screw.
• Remove the exterior door handle gasket.

9.

• Remove the 3 bolts.
• Remove the front door latch assembly.

10.

NOTE: Do not disassemble further if the component is removed for access only.

Release the 2 plugs as illustrated.

11.

• Release the 2 clips.
• Remove the front door latch upper cover.

12.

• Release the 3 clips.
• Remove the front door latch lower cover.

13.

Disconnect the interior door release cable from the door latch.

14.

• Disconnect the exterior handle cable from the door latch.
• Disconnect the door lock cable from the door latch.

INSTALLATION

1.

• Connect the exterior handle cable to the door latch.
• Connect the door lock cable to the door latch.

2. Connect the interior door release cable to the door latch.

3.

Install the front door latch lower cover to the latch.

4.

Install the front door latch upper cover to the latch.

5. Move the 2 plugs in to the original position.

6.

• Install the front door latch assembly.
• Install and tighten the 3 bolts.

  Torque: 12Nm

7.

• Install the exterior door handle gasket.
• Install and tighten the screw.

  Torque: 3Nm

8. Install the front door exterior handle.

9.

• Pull the driver door exterior handle.
• Install the front door lock access cover.

10.

• Tighten the screw.
• Install the access plug.

11.

• Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the front door latch.
• Install the 2 wiring harness clips.

12. Connect the 2 electrical connectors to the exterior door handle assembly.

13. Install the front door window regulator.

14. Connect the startup battery ground cable.
