Land Rover Defender: Raised Air Intake

RAISED AIR INTAKE - PART NUMBER: VPLEP0435

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

WARNING: Accessories which are not correctly installed can be dangerous. Read the instructions carefully prior to installation. Comply with instructions at all times. If in doubt, contact your nearest approved retailer.

NOTES:

Raised Air Intake

REMOVAL

1.

CAUTIONS:

NOTE: The raised air intake is always installed to the left side of the vehicle.

Raised Air Intake

Use a suitable plastic trim tool to remove the lower section of the A-pillar trim.

2.

CAUTIONS:

Raised Air Intake

Use a suitable plastic trim tool to remove the A-pillar trim.

  1. Remove the fixing (S1).
  2. Remove the A-pillar trim by sliding downward first and then lifting away.

3.

WARNING: Make sure that the rivet nut (C) is correctly formed in the A pillar and is checked to make sure it is secure before moving to the next step.

Raised Air Intake

Use a rivet nut installation tool to install the rivet nut (C) to the vehicle body as illustrated.

  1. There is a sticker over the hole that will need to be pierced before you install the rivet nut.
  2. There is a cutout in the A-pillar trim that allows the rivet nut to be installed at the correct location.

CAUTION: Take care to avoid damage to the vehicle paintwork and exterior finishers.

Raised Air Intake

Use a suitable plastic trim tool to remove the side vent trim. Discard the side vent trim.

INSTALLATION

1.

Raised Air Intake

Create guide lines that define the area to be cut from the A-pillar trim.

  1. Use the dimensions as illustrated to mark the area on the A-pillar trim that needs to be cut. Use the bracket (F) to check the guide lines are correct and help identify the cut guide lines.
  2. Mark the cut guide line.

WARNING: Make sure to wear suitable personal protective equipment.

Raised Air Intake

Use suitable tooling to cut the A-pillar trim as illustrated.

3.

Raised Air Intake

Install the A-pillar trim.

  1. Install the A-pillar trim. Locate onto the A-pillar and then slide upwards.
  2. Install the fixing (S1).

Raised Air Intake

Install the lower section of the A-pillar trim.

5.

WARNING: Make sure to wear suitable personal protective equipment.

Clean the illustrated area.

6.

CAUTIONS:

Raised Air Intake

Use suitable tooling to install the 2 rivet type nuts (E) to the raised air intake (A) as illustrated. Do not over tighten the nuts.

  1. Rivet type nut correctly installed. Note the correct recessed position of the thread. The thread must also be concentric to the fixing.
  2. Rivet type nut damaged. Note the incorrect positioning of the thread which is sitting flush with the face of the fixing. The thread may also appear to one side within the fixing.

7. Remove left side door.

Raised Air Intake

Align and position the raised air intake (A) against the vehicle.

  1. Install the arrowed edge.
  2. Check the alignment of the full height of the raised air intake against the A-pillar.
  3. Install the arrowed edge. Make sure the rivet type nuts (E) align with the matching holes.

9.

CAUTIONS:

NOTE: This step requires the aid of another person.

Install, but do not fully tighten the 2 bolts (D) to the 2 rivet type nuts (E) that are part of the raised air intake.

  1. Install the bolts (D) from the inside of the vehicle fender.

NOTES:

Raised Air Intake

Install A post bracket (F) into the slot in the raised air intake.

NOTE: The A-pillar trim is hidden to provide extra clarity.

Raised Air Intake

Install the bolt (B) through the bracket (F) and into the rivet nut (C).

12.

WARNING: If rivet type nut (E) is over torqued it will be damaged and result in the raised air intake not being securely held against the body.

Torque the bolt (D) installed in step 9.

13.

NOTE: The A-pillar trim is hidden to provide extra clarity.

Raised Air Intake

Remove the section of tape at the top of the raised air intake as illustrated.

14.

Raised Air Intake

Install the cap (G) to the raised air intake and secure with clip.

15. Refit left side door.

16.

Raised Air Intake

Make sure the raised air intake is correctly installed.

17.

NOTE: The raised air intake is not a snorkel and is designed not to have a water or air tight fit to the fender.

The moulding is designed to fit against the fender as illustrated in the photos below.

Make sure the raised air intake is correctly installed.
